Malaysia's No.1 Paint Brand

Up Close & Personal: Valerie Choi, Designer at ID Benchmark

ID Benchmark is an interior design firm that takes pride in their constant drive to provide all interior furnishing needs, where their consultants and decorators are disciplined in space planning, design and coordination to create the perfect atmosphere for their clients.

We had a chat with designer Valerie Choi, who helped contribute to their lastest MFID win, Desa Park City Bungalow.

WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION FOR THE PROJECT COME FROM?
VC: Our firms design style has always been basic and minimalist and it was just our luck that the customer wanted a design that was clean, simple and back to basics.

HOW DOES YOUR HOUSE LOOK LIKE?

VC: A colourful combination of Western and Eastern as well as Mediterranean styles *chuckles*

WHAT MAKES A ‘HOUSE’ A ‘HOME’?

VC: Design aside, there is a need to understand the client and their lifestyle and put in a personal touch. A trendy house is just for display, it has no soul.

WHAT ARE SOME WORDS WHICH YOU LIVE BY?
VC: Keep going and keep shining like a star. Make sure you polish yourself to be the very best.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE INTERIOR DESIGN?

VC: The truth is, I have always wanted to be an architect but it wasn’t an easy profession for girls to pursue. Instead, I chose the interior design field becauseI still wanted to be linked to the architecture line for the rest of my life.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE MATERIALS AND WHY?

VC: I always look for natural materials like stone, sandstone and cement as they are evergreen and wont run out of trend. Things like wallpaper coverings do not last very few years.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

VC: At the risk of sounding old- fashioned, my dad inspires me. He is an architect and I grew up looking at plans and colouring plans. It was really cool watching him draw lines all over the paper and I wanted to be just like him.
