Homeowner’s Guide to The Differences Between Sealer and Primer

When moving into a new home, the blank walls are like a fresh canvas waiting for your unique style. However, to achieve a flawless, durable finish, it’s essential not to skip the initial steps of surface preparation.

Two often misunderstood products in the world of paint preparation are sealers and primers. Understanding the difference between these two types can save you time, money, and frustration, especially in Malaysia’s warm, humid climate.

What is a Sealer Paint?

A sealer is a specialised product applied to porous or problematic surfaces before painting. Sealers are essential when preparing walls with powdery finishes, uneven textures, or surfaces prone to moisture. Here’s why sealers matter:

  1. Binding Porous Surfaces
Sealers treat porous walls, such as new drywall or powdery surfaces, by creating a uniform layer that allows the top coat of paint to adhere better. Without a sealer, paint may peel off or look uneven over time.
  2. Barrier Protection
Sealers act as a protective barrier, preventing moisture from seeping into the wall. This barrier is vital in Malaysia’s humid weather, where moisture can lead to issues like mould growth and mildew.
  3. Improved Hiding Power
A sealer also helps hide the original wall colour. For instance, if the wall has a bright or dark base colour, a sealer can create a neutral layer, making it easier to apply your chosen top coat and achieve a smooth, even finish.

Why Use a Sealer?

Using a sealer as part of your coating system can yield several benefits, including:

  1. Stronger Adhesion
Sealers create a bond with both the wall and the top coat, promoting durability.
  2. Resistance to Peeling
In humid climates, paint can peel if not properly adhered. A sealer helps prevent peeling, making the paint job last longer.
  3. Smoother Finish
Sealers are generally thicker than top coats, helping to even out imperfections on the wall surface.
  4. Moisture and Stain Resistance
By sealing the wall, you protect it from potential stains or moisture damage, both common issues in high-humidity environments.

In Malaysia’s humid climate, proper preparation and the right products are essential for durable and long-lasting walls.

For Exterior Walls
Nippon Paint’s recommended coating system, the 1+2 coating system, involves one coat of 8100 Weatherbond Sealer followed by two coats of Weatherbond Ultimate. This combination protects against environmental factors like UV rays, rain, and dirt, ensuring vibrant colours and long-lasting results.

For Interior Walls
Apply one coat of 8200 Premium Interior Sealer to create a strong base, then finish with two coats of Spot-less Plus (Matt or Sheen). This system provides a smooth, easy-to-maintain finish while enhancing air quality and preventing common paint issues like peeling and stains.

Pro Tip: Before applying a sealer, ensure the wall surface is smooth. Fill in cracks or minor imperfections with a skim compound or putty for the best results.

What is a Primer?

While similar in purpose, primers are not exactly the same as sealers. A primer is typically applied to surfaces that need extra adhesion support, such as wood, metal, tiles, and concrete. Unlike sealers, primers are often tailored for use with different surface materials and provide an initial coat that prepares the surface for further painting.

The Key Differences Between Sealers and Primers

  1. Usage with Paint Types
Nippon Paint’s sealers are designed to pair with water-based paints. Primers, however, are primarily used with solvent-based paints and are suitable for various materials beyond just walls, including wood and metal surfaces.
  2. Surface Compatibility
Sealers are generally for porous or chalky surfaces that need binding support, while primers are used to create a foundation layer for surfaces that may otherwise be challenging to paint, like steel or untreated wood.
Infographic explaining the differences between sealer paint and primer paint, featuring Nippon Paint products. Highlights include 8200 Premium Interior Sealer for moisture protection and adhesion on porous surfaces, and Hydro Wood & Metal Primer for solvent-based paints on challenging surfaces. Benefits of using sealer paint include stronger adhesion, moisture resistance, and a smoother finish, promoting Nippon Paint's 1+2 Coating System for optimal results.

To achieve a flawless and long-lasting finish, it is important to choose the appropriate preparation layer for your project. A sealer enhances the adhesion of the topcoat on porous walls, reduces moisture damage, and provides a smooth, even base. On the other hand, a primer is ideal for preparing challenging surfaces such as wood and metal, ensuring a durable and even application.

Conclusion

For your next painting project, consider following Nippon Paint’s recommended coating system. This involves applying one layer of sealer as the base, followed by two layers of topcoat for added durability and protection. This method helps your home withstand the effects of Malaysia’s humid weather while delivering a beautifully finished look that lasts.

How to Prevent and Repair Peeling Paint

Living in Malaysia, where the climate is humid with frequent rainfall, it’s common to encounter issues like peeling, flaking, or blistering paint on exterior walls. In this article, we’ll explore the causes behind these paint problems, how to prevent them, and how Nippon Paint’s recommended coating system can help you achieve a durable, long-lasting finish for your walls.

What Causes Paint Peeling or Flaking, and How Can You Prevent It?

1. Poor Surface Preparation Before Painting

One of the primary reasons for peeling paint is inadequate surface preparation. If a surface is not properly cleaned and prepared before painting, the paint may not adhere well, leading to issues like flaking and peeling.

Proper surface preparation is essential for any successful paint job. Ensure the surface is clean, free from dust and dirt, and appropriately primed before applying paint. While it’s possible to do this yourself, hiring a professional painting service can be a wise investment, as professionals have the experience and tools to prepare and paint surfaces effectively.

2. Humidity and Moisture

High humidity and moisture are common in Malaysia and can cause significant paint problems. When moisture seeps through paint layers, it can weaken the bond between the paint and the wall, leading to peeling. Humidity also encourages mould and mildew growth, which can ruin the paint’s appearance and adhesion. This is particularly problematic in areas like exterior walls, bathrooms, kitchens, and car porches – anywhere exposed to moisture and temperature changes.

Additionally, the Malaysian climate often fluctuates between high and low temperatures, causing walls to expand and contract. This expansion and contraction stress the paint layer, weakening its adhesion and eventually causing it to peel.

How to Prevent Paint from Peeling in the Future

i) Clean the Surface Thoroughly

If you’re moving into a new home or planning to repaint walls with peeling issues, start by cleaning the surface.

For interior walls, remove dust and dirt with a mild soap solution and a damp cloth to ensure a clean, smooth base for paint application. A clean surface enhances the paint’s adhesion and creates a solid foundation for a long-lasting finish.

For exterior walls, it’s essential to remove built-up grime, mould, and mildew that can accumulate over time due to exposure to the elements. Use Nippon Paint Fungicidal Wash to effectively treat and clean the surface, eliminating mould and mildew that can compromise paint adhesion. For stubborn stains or dirt, you can use a pressure washer to thoroughly cleanse the walls. Cleaning exterior surfaces thoroughly helps ensure that the paint will bond properly and maintain durability, even in Malaysia’s challenging weather conditions.

ii) Keep the Area Dry

While it’s difficult to keep exterior walls dry, indoor spaces like bathrooms and kitchens can benefit from good ventilation. Installing exhaust fans or keeping windows open can reduce humidity levels, helping to maintain the paint’s adhesion over time.

iii) Choose the Right Paint for the Surface

Selecting the right paint type for each surface is crucial. For example, paint formulated for wood differs from paint made for concrete or walls. Using the correct type of paint for each material improves adhesion and durability, preventing future peeling issues.

Tip: Always check the paint’s expiration date before using it. Expired paint may lose its adhesive properties, leading to poor performance and peeling.

For interior walls, it suggests using 1 coat of Nippon Paint 8200 Premium Interior Sealer followed by 2 coats of Spotless Plus Matt topcoat. For exterior walls, it recommends 1 coat of Nippon Paint 8100 Weatherbond Sealer and 2 coats of Weatherbond Ultimate topcoat, emphasizing the effectiveness of Nippon Paint's 1+2 coating system for optimal results.

Nippon Paint’s Recommended Coating System for Long-Lasting Paint

At Nippon Paint, we recommend using our trusted 1+2 coating system, which combines one layer of sealer with two layers of topcoat. This system ensures optimal durability and helps extend the lifespan of your paint, providing a flawless and long-lasting finish.

Step 1: Apply a High-Performance Wall Sealer

For Exterior Walls – Use Nippon Paint 8100 Weatherbond Sealer to create a strong foundation for exterior walls. This sealer protects against efflorescence and alkalinity, ensuring better adhesion for the topcoat. It helps your walls resist Malaysia’s harsh weather conditions, such as heavy rain and humidity, while promoting a durable and long-lasting paint finish.

For Interior Walls – Apply Nippon Paint 8200 Premium Interior Sealer to prepare interior surfaces. This sealer provides excellent adhesion and moisture resistance, creating an even base for the topcoat. It helps prevent paint peeling and ensures a smooth, polished finish for your walls.

Both sealers are crucial for repairing peeling paint, ensuring proper adhesion and long-term durability for your walls.

Step 2: Apply Two Coats of Topcoat

For Exterior Walls – Apply two coats of Nippon Paint Weatherbond Ultimate. This advanced exterior paint is specially designed for Malaysia’s climate, offering superior protection against UV rays, rain, and environmental stresses. Weatherbond Ultimate features Quartz and Fibra Technologies, which enhance its durability by forming a hard and tough paint film. This ensures long-lasting protection against cracking, flaking, and peeling. With up to 15 years of protection and vibrant, fade-resistant colours, Weatherbond Ultimate is the ideal choice for maintaining a fresh and resilient appearance for your exterior walls.

For Interior Walls – Apply two coats of Nippon Paint Spot-less Plus. This paint not only addresses peeling paint problems but also enhances indoor air quality with its odourless, low-VOC formula. It provides excellent adhesion, a smooth finish, and easy touch-up properties, making it ideal for a polished and long-lasting look. The luxurious smoothness adds elegance to your walls, making them both durable and beautiful.

Conclusion

No paint lasts forever, especially in humid environments. Factors like ageing walls, poor ventilation, and exposure to the elements can cause paint to peel over time. By addressing the root causes and preparing surfaces properly, you can extend the life of your paint and keep your home looking fresh.

Investing in quality products and following Nippon Paint’s recommended coating system will protect your walls and enhance your home’s aesthetics and durability.
